Carrie Gadsden Obituary

 

Carrie Beatrice “Sista” Gadsden, 72, of Brooklyn, New York, was born to Edward Gadsden and Effie Gadsden on October 11, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York.

Sista attended Public School 20, Junior High School 117, and Midwood High School, and always graduated with honors. Additionally, she earned a bachelor’s in Business Administration at University of Buffalo. She was awarded a Master’s’ in Business Administration from Long Island University. When she had finished her Master’s, she briefly studied  Jewelry Design at The Fashion Institute of Technology.

Carrie held a variety of jobs. During college, she was a math teacher. She also worked as a financial analyst for the NYC Department of Housing and Preservation. Additionally, she worked for the USPS as a payroll agent and mail clerk.

Carrie had a strong desire to transform others for the better. In 2012, she additionally held the position of Treasurer of the Families United for Racial and Economical. She zealously promoted better housing for NYCHA tenants during her time in office. In 2014, Carrie was one of the main organizers who pushed for the renovation of the Gowanus Community Center, where she briefly resided. Her efforts led to councilman Stephen Levin committing $475,000 to the center through participatory budgeting.

Carrie was mother to Dara Alina Gadsden. She raised her child with love and devotion.

Sista as we proudly called her cherished spending time with friends and family., dancing, cooking and designing outfits. Her favorite color is yellow and one of her favorite dishes was Fried Whiting, Cabbage and Cornbread. She cherished her grandmotherhood above anything else. Sista was very family oriented.

Her favorite artist was Luther Vandross. You should have seen her dancing to his songs! She was a Daddy’s Girl too. She was well known for her intelligence, beauty, and compassion helping everyone around her. She was very honest, sometimes too honest at times.

Carrie was preceded in death by her son Abdur. Her Brothers Russell and Calvin. Also her sister Mary.

Many will miss Carrie, especially her devoted friend and Dara’s Godmother Mary McMillan who was always there for her through the highs and lows, the sweet and sour.

She is survived by her brothers Willie, David and Robert. Nephews Russell, David “Sean”, Chad, Emmanuel and Darius. Nieces Tesha and Crystal. Nieces in Law Syretta and Nyqwan. Grand Nephews Justin, Yasir, Rakim. A host of cousins and friends. Her daughter Dara and grandson Alexander.
