Cleveland Gilliard Obituary

On Tuesday May 16, 2023, Cleveland Gilliard peacefully accepted his calling from the Lord at the The Amsterdam Nursing home, New York, New York. Cleveland Gilliard was born on January 15, 1928, to the late Katie Richard Gilliard and Richmond Gilliard in Green Pond, South Carolina. Cleveland grew up in the Pynes Community area of Green Pond with his parents and two siblings: One preceded him in death Freezie Gilliard Jackson. Also, preceded him in death is his wife Wilhelmina Gilliard and his four children: Patricia G. Fields, Richard Gilliard, David Gilliard, and Cleveland Gilliard, Jr.

At an early each he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at St. Mary A.M.E. Church. He received his early education at the local school within the Colleton County community. When he reached the high school level, his parents sent him and his brother Lee Gilliard to live with relatives in Charleston, South Carolina to attend Burke High School.

After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the US Army and was honorably discharged. When he left the Military, he moved to New York City, married his wife the Late Wilhelmina Gilliard and became a carpenter, a furniture builder. He loved every minute of it.

Cleveland leaves to cherish his memories: One brother; Lee Gilliard, Accokeek MD, Two daughters-in-law: Deborah Gilliard of New York City, Mamie Gilliard of Augusta Georgia. Six grands: Dr. Errol L. Fields (David) of Baltimore Maryland, Dr. Julie Taylor (Malcolm) of Baltimore Maryland, Kahlila Brown of Augusta Georgia, Nyell Gilliard (Danielle) Tyrone Gilliard (Tere), Joyell Gilliard, of New York, NY. Eight great-grands: Tahtiana Gilliard, Tyson Gilliard, Kendell Gilliard, New York, NY. Zy’Novia Brown, Avery West, Douglas Brown Jr, Leilani Hall, Diontrei West, Augusta Georgia. Five nieces: Ogletha Gilliard-Fludd of Green Pond, Carol Jackson Powell of Charleston, SC, Ethelyn Gilliard, Hampton, SC. Two nieces preceded him in death Carolyn and Yvonne Gilliard of New York, NY. Three Nephews; Lee Gilliard Jr. of New York, NY, Julian Jackson of Green Pond, SC. one preceded him in death Eric L. Gilliard. A host of great-great grandchildren, grandnieces, grandnephew, great-grandnephew, cousins, family and friends, and his extended family of the late Eva Goddard a very special friend.
