Deacon Walter Cockrum Obituary

 

Deacon Walter Cockrum, Sr., was born on October 19, 1932, in Round O, South Carolina. He was the son of the late David Cockrum and Lugener Green Cockrum.  On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, our Almighty Father reached down and took the hand of Deacon Walter Cockrum, Sr. to take him home.

He received his education from the Colleton County School system.

He was married to his sweetheart, Ella Mae Sykes Cockrum, in 1954, to this union five children were born, Roy Cockrum, Walter Cockrum, Jr, Olympia Cockrum Sams, Anthony Cockrum and Vernon Cockrum.  Also, have a daughter, Betsy “Tina” Goldwire.

Deacon Cockrum was a man with a humble spirit who loved to praise the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Deacon Cockrum enjoyed traveling with his family to various states and oh how we enjoyed being with him. He was fearless at the amusement parks. He was a lifelong member of Canaan Baptist Church in Round O, South Carolina. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1980, he also was a past Chairman of the Deacon Board, he served as a Deacon faithfully until his death. He also has served as a Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the Senior Choir, Male Chorus and the combined Choir.

Deacon Cockrum worked at the Savannah River Plant in Barnwell, South Carolina for forty-three years where he advanced to become a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. After retiring he became employed with the Colleton County School District as a Bus Driver and later as a Convenient Site Operator for the Colleton County Solid Waste Department.

Deacon Cockrum was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Mae Sykes Cockrum, three sons, Roy Cockrum, Anthony Cockrum and Walter Cockrum Jr.  His sister, Luevern Cockrum Logan, two brothers, Leon Cockrum and James Marvin Cockrum and one grandson, Antwan Sams.

Those left to cherish fond and loving memories: Two daughters. Betsy “Tina” Goldwire, Rincon, Ga, and Olympia Cockrum Sams, Walterboro, SC, one son, Vernon Cockrum (Michelle) Atlanta, Ga; Two sisters, Janie Vease Cockrum Beddard, Cleveland Ohio, Adell Cockrum, Walterboro, SC; one daughter-in-law, Denise Palmer-Cockrum; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and five great great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family and friends.

II Timothy 4:6-8 “For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness…”
