“Many women have done excellently, but you surpassed them all.” Proverbs 31:29
Edith Pearl Manigo Harris, age 83, the daughter of the late Samuel Manigo and Lillie B. Manigo was born on November 3, 1941 in Round-O, South Carolina.
Edith would share her story of how she attended school in Colleton County, but was forced to quit school in her senior year. Born the second of nine children, she had to work and help support her family. This detour did not stop Edith from achieving her dream of becoming a nurse. While working a full time job as a floor maid at Colleton County Hospital and raising two daughters, Edith rebooted her formal education. With her determination, tenacity, and persistence, she received a SC high school diploma and an LPN license in 1972. She continued her education at the Baptist College of Charleston (Charleston Southern University) where she received an Associates Degree in Nursing in 1978 and later passed the South Carolina Nursing Boards to receive her Registered Nurse license. Edith’s hard work and diligence paid off. She made history in Colleton County becoming the first African American to be hired in an administrative position as a Nursing Supervisor at Colleton County Hospital and the first African American nurse hired at the Colleton County Health Department. Although Edith had a highly successful nursing career, she always said that her greatest accomplishment and joy in life were her two daughters, Pamela and Darlene.
As she was building a closer relationship with God, Edith returned to Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, the church of her upbringing. She loved her church and was a very active member. She served in many capacities including singing on the Gospel Choir, President of Stewardess Board #1, member of the Trustee Board, President of the Women’s Missionary Society, YPD President, member of the Garden Club, Pastor’s Aide Board member, and member of the Kitchen Committee. Edith often said that she was at Mt. Zion every time the church doors opened because there would eventually come a time when she would be unable to attend, and she did not want to have any regrets.
Edith will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and compassionate heart. She was a loving mother, doting grandmother, supportive sister, an awesome aunt, and loyal friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Edith never met a stranger and would help anyone who needed assistance. She always encouraged young people to pursue their dreams and never give up. She would say reach for the sky and fall among the stars. Edith was an avid gardener and culinary genius, and loved to pass the time by crocheting and doing needle point art. She was an adventurous traveler who enjoyed cruising on the high seas to tropical and exotic destinations. Edith was a diligent, hardworking woman who retired after 43 years of loyal service.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Manigo and Lillie B. Manigo Brown and twin sisters, Joann and Joyce Manigo.
Edith entered eternal rest on January 1, 2025, at her home in Walterboro, South Carolina.
