Mrs. Etta Mae George Sumter was born on November 21, 1945 in Walterboro, SC. She was the daughter of the late Holland Lawson George, Sr. and the late Marie Raysor George. She departed from this earthly life on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Pruitt Health in Walterboro, SC.
Etta was a graduate of Colleton High School Class of 1964. She also attended Mather Junior College in Beaufort, SC. In her later years she was a Secretary at Black Street Elementary School. Following those years, she was an Attendance Clerk at Colleton High School and later Walterboro High School.
Etta retired from the Colleton County School District after 30 years of service in May of 1997.
Etta joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church at an early age and was baptized
under the leadership of Reverend W.E. Chaney. She served on the Junior Usher Board, member of the Young Adult Crusaders and sang on various choirs in Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
She was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Harry Donald Sumter. To this union two children were born Stacey and Takesha.
Etta was preceded in death by her parents, sister Gertie Ann Williams and two brothers Ernest George and Daniel George.
She leaves to cherish her memories two devoted, loving daughters: Stacey Sumter of Walterboro, SC, and Takesha Sumter Ellis (Keith) of Walterboro, SC, one loving and caring granddaughter, Megan Gowins of Walterboro, SC; four brothers Lawson George (Ruthann) of Kingstree, SC, Thomas George, of Walterboro, SC, Willie Ray (Cindy) of Walterboro, SC , Eugene Donaldson of Aiken, SC; a cousin whom she called her sister, Ruth George of Walterboro, SC, a devoted sister-in-law Gwendolyn George of Walterboro, SC, sisters-in-law; Diane Meminger of New York, NY and Janice George of Walterboro, SC. One brother-in-law: Robert Meminger (Willa) of Ridgeville, SC, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends. The Sumter Family would like to send a special thank you to cousins, Marie George Thompson, Dr. Gail L. Rearden and Michelle Dinkins.
