Flossie Mae Wright was born July 28, 1930, in Jacksonboro, South Carolina to the late Samuel McHoney and Albertha Davis. Flossie attended primary school in Jacksonboro, South Carolina. At the age of 13, Flossie was baptized and became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Jacksonboro, South Carolina. Over the next 40 years, Flossie served as a choir member, usher, and church secretary!
After graduating from Burke High School in Charleston, South Carolina, Flossie was denied entrance into nursing school in South Carolina because she was black. Flossie moved to New York City where she attended Central School for Practical Nursing. After graduating from Central School for Practical nursing in 1961, Flossie continued her education and graduated from The Bronx Community College. Flossie’s first nursing job was at Jacoby Hospital in The Bronx, New York. After a few years at Jacoby Hospital, Flossie decided to work at Riker’s Island Correctional Facility and became the Head Nurse until 1976.
In 1976, Flossie moved back to Charleston, South Carolina where she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) until she retired in 1996. After retiring from the (VA), Flossie returned to work at the Lieber Correctional Institution Prison in Ridgeville, South Carolina. After fully retiring from the workforce as a nurse, Flossie had what she termed a “vision from GOD” to open The Jacksonboro Community Center.
The Jacksonboro Community Center was a place where children in the community could get tutoring, help with their homework, and a free lunch program was also established. Additionally, the children went on educational fieldtrips and were introduced to the concept of attending college in the future. Flossie touched many lives in a positive way during her 87 years on this earth!
She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Samuel McHoney and Albertha Davis, her husband, Alfred William “Bill” Wright, and her eldest son, John Lee Wright, grandchildren Splendid and Divine Wright.
She leaves to honor her memory two sons, Alfred B. Wright (Theresa) of Stockbridge, GA and Rodney T. Wright (Omega) of Jacksonboro, SC. Siblings, Freddy Glover (Mary) of Jacksonboro, SC, Jeanette Nelson of Charleston, SC, Queen E. Little of Charleston, SC, Odell Scriben of Charleston, SC, Alphonso Higgins of Charleston, SC and Stepmother Rosalee McHoney of Jacksonboro, SC. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, two God daughters, and her best friends of over sixty years, Estelle Richmond (The Bronx, NY) and Irish Boyd (Florida).
