John Wesley Fields was born November 6, 1935 in Round O, South Carolina to the late Joseph and Lennie (Memminger) Fields. John left for his journey to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 8, 2016 at the Veterans’ Victory House, in Walterboro, South Carolina.
At an early age in life John joined St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, Cottageville, South Carolina. As a young adult he moved his membership to Sharon Baptist Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey, and he was ordained as a Deacon. He sang on the Sharon Men’s Choir and was the chairmen of the Men’s Prison Ministries. Later in life John return home to Colleton County and moved his membership and service as the Youth Deacon to Canaan Baptist Church, Round O, South Carolina and the Men’s Fellowship Ministry. He truly enjoyed being a deacon and spending time in prayer with the Lord.
John was educated in the public schools of Colleton County. In 1953 he joined the United States Army. After his service to his country he made New Jersey his home and began a career driving tractor trailer trucks for fifty four years. John was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Throughout his career he was employed with Blue Bird, Roadway, Betta-Way and Revlon, Inc. of New Jersey. When he retired and moved back to Walterboro, he worked part time at Clean Management and Southern Transportation of South Carolina for a few more years. He was a Noble of the Mystic Shrine KHUFU Temple# 120 of Princeton, New Jersey for 38 years. John loved being a deacon, driving his big trucks, entertaining his family and friends, planting and working in his yard!
He was preceded in death by four brothers: James M., Sinclair, Joe L., and Elijah Ben Fields; and five Sisters-in-Laws: Eleanor, Burt, Willa Mae, Rose and Judith Fields.
Deacon John Fields leaves to cherish his memories, Wife of twenty years: Gwendolyn Fields; Sons: John Victor Fields of Walterboro, South Carolina and Jermaine Tyrone Fields of Pence, Florida; Daughters: Janelle Francis Fields of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Tracie (Erik) Moore of East Orange, New Jersey; Brothers: Isaiah Wilbur Fields of Pottstown, Pennsylvania and Joe Robert (Betty) Tenner of Willingboro, New Jersey; grandchildren, Desiree, Danyiel, Yusef Shockley, Destinee Fields, Tavia, Ri’Chard, Rakeem McCullough and Justin Grant; nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
