Mother Katie Richard Gilliard Obituary

On Tuesday November 22, 2016 Mother Katie Richard Gilliard peacefully accepted her calling from the Lord at Colleton Medical Center. She had already exceeded the promise of “three scores and ten” and was living on God’s grace. She was a true women of God.

 Katie Richard Gilliard was born on May 22, 1910 to the late Charlotte Drayton Richard and Sammie Richard in Green Pond, South Carolina. Katie grew up in the Pynes Community area of Green Pond with her parents and five siblings: who preceded her in death; Ella Mae Richard Seabrooks, Givvie Richard, Connie Richard Moses Richard and Azelee Richard.

 She received her early education at the local school house within the community. At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Her family has always known her to be in the Church.

 In 1927 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Richmond Gilliard and from that union three children were born: Lee Gilliard, and Clevland Gilliard and  was preceded in death by Freezie Gilliard Jackson.

 Katie has had many different jobs in her life time, from a farm laborer to a seamstress. She made sure that her family was well taken care of.

 Katie Richard Gilliard was a life-long member of St. Mary A.M.E. and White Hall A.M.E. Church where she served on the Trust Board, Senior Choir member and the Women’s Missionary Society.

 Katie leaves to cherish her memories: two sons; Clevland Gilliard and Lee Gilliard, Twelve grandchildren four of which she reared in the home; Ogletha Gilliard-Fludd (Darrell) of Miami, Florida, St. Julian Jackson of Green Pond, South Carolina, Carol Jackson Powell (Kenneth) of Charleston, South Carolina, Clevland Gilliard, Jr. (Mamie) of Augusta, Georgia, David Gilliard of New York, Patricia Fields (Larry) of Beaufort, South Carolina, Lee Gilliard, Jr. (Joann) of New York; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Richard of Savannah, Georgia; a special grand daughter-in-law, Ethelyn Gilliard; two godchildren, Helen Janet Richard Hamilton and Lloyd Fields of Green Pond, South Carolina. A host of great grands and great-great grands, nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends. One special cousin Betty Holmes.

 Katie was preceded in the death by her daughters-in-law, Wilamena and Dorothy Gilliard; grandson who was reared in the home, Eric Gilliard, and Richard Gilliard, Yvonne Gilliard, Carolyn Gilliard of New York.
